The National Ballet announced earlier today that the June 2020 world premiere of Karen Kain’s Swan Lake has been postponed to June 2021. I’m sad that we don’t get to close the 19/20 season with an amazing celebration of Karen Kain’s 50th year with the NBC, but I’m looking forward to what the revised 20/21 season is going to be. (I’m calling it the fairytale season because we have Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Cinderella, and Swan Lake on the list.) I feel so fortunate to have seen every single one of the performances this year. This ballet season was nothing short of phenomenal. We’re so lucky that we have one of the world’s best ballet companies just in our backyard. We got to see the the amazing range and talent of our dancers in company classics like Giselle, The Nutcracker, and Romeo & Juliet; very artistic pieces like Chroma (my personal fave), Etudes, and Piano Concerto # 1; the NBC debuts of Chaconne, Petite Mort, and Marguerite & Armand; and world premieres of exciting new ballets Orpheus Alive and Angels’ Atlas. What a season we’ve had! Very well done, @nationalballet! See you in November! 🩰

I made a sim called Dan Cheddar and gave him the grilled cheese aspiration. I think he’ll be proud of me. Real fans of The Sims will get the grilled cheese reference. Day four in isolation was crazy. Our work servers kept on crashing, so my work kept on getting interrupted. Decided to just laze around and catch up on my mags.

Day 3 of self-isolation. Peanut butter, banana, and sour cherry preserves sandwich.

This isolation period is gonna make me so fat. LOL Toasted whole wheat bread with avocado and eggs and organic goji green tea. 🍞🥑🥚🍵

Working from home isn’t so bad. I woke up at 9:45AM but didn’t get out of bed until about 10. Checked my emails and my renders from the night before. Did a quick round of ashtanga, and then I headed down for some food. I know that this is chockfull of calories, but the toasted pan de sal was just screaming to have cream cheese and strawberry jam spread over it. Brunch earlier today was good. Really, really good. Heck, it was so good that more than 8 hours later, I’m still thinking about it. LOL 😆

Romeo and Juliet. Four Seasons Centre. Toronto, ON. March 11, 2011. I’ve seen Romeo and Juliet performed so many times, but this is the first time that I saw it in ballet form. The NBC’s rendition, choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky, is a beautiful and moving adaptation of this classic Shakespearean tale. Watching it in dance form added to the romanticism and tragedy of it all. It was pure bliss to have seen Guillaume Côté and Elena Lobsanova, the original cast from the 2011 premiere, perform the same roles tonight. Also, shoutout to Jack Bertinshaw (Mercutio) and Skylar Campbell (Benvolio) for doing an amazing job portraying two of the most important yet underrated characters in this story (Benvolio more so). I should know, I wrote a 3500-word essay dissecting their characters for one of my theatre classes in uni. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the National Ballet had to cancel the remaining performances of Romeo and Juliet. The World Premiere of Karen Kain’s Swan Lake is still expected to proceed in June. Keep safe, everyone. Remember to always wash your hands!

Come From Away at the Royal Alex. Toronto, ON. March 11, 2020. To be honest, I don’t like the box seats here at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. The view is quite partial. Getting seats in the mezzanine would have been better. I much prefer the box seats at the Four Seasons because there you could pick the more central, albeit pricier, seats that have a better field of view. Even our clients noticed how poor our view was. Anyway, Come From Away is such a moving and inspiring musical that showcases the kindness and humanity of Newfoundlanders, and Canadians as a whole. This is the 4th time that I’ve seen this play, but I still laugh at the jokes and get emotional at certain moments. This is one of the shows that I would recommend everyone to see. It’s currently running on Broadway in New York (Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre), on the Entertainment District in Toronto (Royal Alexandra Theatre), on West End in London (Phoenix Theatre), and on East End in Melbourne (Comedy Theatre).

Let’s all take a moment to celebrate and appreciate all the women in our lives—our mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, grandmothers, aunts, and women friends. All the women who are symbols of strength and stability, the hidden figures, and the unsung heroes. It’s sad that even in the 21st Century, a lot of women are still overlooked, abused, and not afforded the same opportunities and respect that they deserve. Let’s all try to do better for all women. And when I say all the women, I mean ALL women—transwomen included. It’s high time that we recognize that division never results in anything good. Preach love, not hate. Spread acceptance, not rejection. Promote parity, not inequality. Happy #InternationalWomensDay!
